CHAPTER EIGHT

“Don’t you cry for that boy.” Berta’s tone was filled with disgust.

“And to think that Mayor Adrieux actually set aside important mayoral business in order to deal with this whole terrible mess.” Maureen angrily paced the floor with her bible clenched in one pale fist. “Poor Georges.” She choked back a sob. “To take a beating from that vicious dog.”

Fury burned in Simone’s stomach. He’s dead! She wanted to scream at Maureen. She wanted to tear her hair out. He’s dead you fuckin’ bitch!

“Maureen, I can’t begin to tell you how sorry I am,” Berta apologized.

Maureen glared at her. “What you should be sorry about is your daughter’s reputation.” She stared Berta down. “You poor woman. I do believe that your daughter is ruined.”

Simone sat on the edge of Maureen’s favorite antique high back chair. The smell of floor polish burned her nostrils. She rocked with her hands pressed to her stomach. The sight of Cotton lying dead in the grass, his blank stare attached to the sun – Sheriff Bradford’s satisfied smile as he straightened Cotton’s neck with the sole of a muddy, leather boot...

“Rancid bitch,” she whispered fiercely.

Berta and Maureen gasped simultaneously – the sound similar to the howling of wind.

Maureen rounded on her with clenched fists. “What did you say?”

“Reckon I may as well run you on home now.” Paul appeared seemingly from thin air and crossed the room with his steady but uneven gait and headed straight for her. “Come on here, chile.” He grabbed her by the elbow and carefully pulled her to her feet.

“What did you call me?” Maureen shouted shrilly. Her face was flushed rage purple.

“I called you a self-righteous bitch.” Simone’s words dripped resentment. Berta groaned with disappointment.

“Oh, Lawd,” Paul sighed and ran a nervous hand across his brow.

Maureen’s tone was wicked. “Berta did you know that your daughter was pregnant?”

Berta slumped into a chair and began to cry into her apron.

“But how could you not?” Maureen folded her arms across her chest and eyed Simone with contempt. “She’s just so pleasantly plump.”

A heavy sigh from Paul was followed by a long groan as he settled into a chair. Simone was now the one to eye Maureen with contempt. She was so humiliated that she could hardly form words. “Your son – rutting, nasty pervert that he is – knocked me out cold so he could climb on top of me.”

“Oh my word,” Berta exclaimed and grabbed her bosom.

“You lie!” Maureen screamed. Her bible fell to the floor with a loud thump and thin lips rolled back to expose her teeth. A large vein pulsed in her forehead “Don’t you accuse my son of that – that bastard child!” She pointed at Simone’s stomach with a shaky finger. “Everyone knows that you were spreading your legs for Cotton Neal!”

Simone took a menacing step forward. She wanted to bash Maureen’s head in. “He raped me!”

“Oh, help me, Lawd. Help me,” Berta cried, her voice breaking with grief.

“Wait a minute now,” Paul said shaking his head.
